Considering Assassin's Creed Valhalla on PS5? This guide covers next-gen features, performance, and key trade-offs to help you decide if it's the right Viking adventure for you.
Quick answer
Assassin's Creed Valhalla on PS5 delivers a smoother, faster experience with improved load times and DualSense features compared to last-gen versions, but the core game is identical across platforms. If you own a PS5 and want the best performance, this is the version to get.
Next-gen upgrades on PS5
The PS5 version of Assassin's Creed Valhalla runs at a stable 60 frames per second with dynamic 4K resolution, making exploration and combat noticeably smoother than on PS4. Load times are drastically reduced thanks to the SSD, so fast traveling between England and Norway takes only seconds.
The DualSense controller adds haptic feedback for weapon impacts and environmental effects, though adaptive triggers are not heavily utilized. The game also supports the PS5 Activity Cards feature, letting you jump directly into specific missions or regions from the console's home screen.
What stays the same
The actual content—story, quests, map, and all downloadable content (DLC)—is identical across PS4 and PS5. If you already own the PS4 version, you can upgrade to the PS5 version for free, and your save data transfers via Ubisoft Connect. The only differences are technical performance and controller features.
There is no exclusive PS5 mission, weapon, or cosmetic. The game's size is also similar on both consoles, around 80-90 GB after updates.
Consider the PS4 version if you share a console
If you have a PS4 in another room or plan to play on both consoles, buying the PS4 version gives you access to both generations through the free upgrade. The PS5 disc version only works on PS5, while the PS4 disc works on both (with the upgrade).
Digital buyers should check whether the listing explicitly includes the PS5 version or just the PS4 version with a free upgrade path, as some third-party sellers may only offer the PS4 code.
Decision rules for buying Assassin's Creed Valhalla on PS5
- Performance priority: Choose the PS5 version if you want the smoothest gameplay with 60 FPS and near-instant loading. The PS4 version is capped at 30 FPS and has longer load times.
- Cross-generation play: If you also play on PS4, buy the PS4 version (disc or digital) and use the free upgrade on PS5. The PS5 disc only works on PS5. Verify the listing includes the free upgrade before buying a PS4 digital code.
- DualSense features: The PS5 version supports haptic feedback for combat and exploration, but adaptive triggers are minimal. If controller immersion matters to you, the PS5 version offers a slight edge.
- Content parity: All story content, DLC, and updates are identical on both platforms. There are no PS5-exclusive missions or items. Your choice is purely about performance and convenience, not missing out on content.
