Learn how to use the VMUPro as a Dreamcast memory card and handheld emulator. Step-by-step setup, save management, and common pitfalls.
Quick answer
The VMUPro replaces your Dreamcast memory card and doubles as a handheld emulator. Set it up once, then manage saves and play 8-bit games on the go.
What makes the VMUPro different from a standard Dreamcast VMU
A standard Dreamcast VMU stores saves and plays simple mini-games, but its small screen and limited storage feel restrictive today. The VMUPro keeps the same form factor while adding a larger OLED display, USB-C charging, and the ability to run 8-bit console emulators. You can use it as a dedicated memory card for your Dreamcast or detach it to play retro games anywhere.
Because the VMUPro is a modern redesign, it does not support the original VMU's infrared link for two-player mini-games. If that feature matters to you, keep an original VMU for those specific titles. For everything else—save storage, backup, and portable emulation—the VMUPro is a direct upgrade.
How to set up and use your VMUPro
- Charge the VMUPro fully before first use: Connect the VMUPro to a USB-C charger. A full charge takes about 2 hours. The OLED screen will show the battery indicator. Do not use the VMUPro while charging for the first time—let it reach 100% to calibrate the battery gauge.
- Insert the VMUPro into your Dreamcast controller: Slide the VMUPro into the VMU slot on the Dreamcast controller until it clicks. The console will recognize it as a standard memory card. You can now save and load games normally. If the Dreamcast does not detect the VMUPro, remove and reinsert it firmly. The slot can be tight on older controllers.
- Manage saves via the VMUPro menu: Press the VMUPro's button to access its on-screen menu. From there you can copy, delete, or back up individual save files. Use the directional pad to navigate. Always back up saves to a computer before deleting files. The VMUPro uses a standard USB-C connection for data transfer.
- Load and play emulated games: Download compatible 8-bit ROMs to a microSD card (not included). Insert the card into the VMUPro, then select the emulator from the handheld mode menu. Use the built-in controls to play. Only use ROMs you own legally. The VMUPro does not support every 8-bit system—check the compatibility list on the manufacturer's site before downloading.
- Switch between Dreamcast and handheld modes: When the VMUPro is in the Dreamcast controller, it acts as a memory card. To use handheld mode, remove it from the controller and press the button to wake it. The VMUPro remembers which mode it was in last. If the screen stays black after removal, hold the button for 3 seconds to force a mode switch. This is normal after a long idle period.
