Pair modern Bluetooth controllers with your original PlayStation or PS2 using the 8BitDo Retro Receiver. Follow these simple steps for wireless retro gaming.

Quick answer

Plug the 8BitDo Retro Receiver into your PS1 or PS2 controller port, put your Bluetooth controller into pairing mode, and press the receiver's sync button. The receiver supports Xbox One/Series, PS4/PS5, Switch Pro, Wii U Pro, and partial 8BitDo controllers.

What the 8BitDo Retro Receiver supports

The 8BitDo Retro Receiver for PS1/PS2 works with original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles, as well as Windows 10/11. It accepts Bluetooth controllers including Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Elite controllers, PS4 and PS5 controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro and Wii U Pro controllers, and partial 8BitDo Bluetooth controllers and arcade sticks (not the Xbox Edition). Vibration feedback is supported, and firmware updates are available through the 8BitDo Ultimate Software.

Important compatibility note

Not every 8BitDo controller works with this receiver. The receiver does not support the 8BitDo Xbox Edition controllers. If you own an 8BitDo controller, check the product description or try pairing it first. For non-8BitDo controllers, compatibility is broad but not guaranteed for every obscure third-party pad.

Step-by-step setup guide

  1. Plug in the receiver: Insert the 8BitDo Retro Receiver into the controller port on the front of your PS1 or PS2. The receiver's LED will start blinking slowly, indicating it is powered and ready to pair. Do not plug the receiver into a USB port on the console — it only works in the controller port.
  2. Put your controller into pairing mode: For most controllers, hold the sync/pair button until the LED flashes rapidly. For Xbox One/Series controllers, press the sync button on top. For PS4/PS5 controllers, hold the Share and PS buttons simultaneously. For Switch Pro controllers, hold the sync button on the top edge. If the controller does not enter pairing mode after 5 seconds, check the battery or try a different button combination.
  3. Sync the receiver with the controller: Press and hold the sync button on the 8BitDo Retro Receiver for about 2 seconds. The LED will blink faster. When the controller connects, the receiver's LED becomes solid. Test movement and buttons in a game. If pairing fails, turn off the controller, restart the console, and repeat steps 2 and 3. Some controllers require the receiver to be in sync mode first.
  4. Adjust settings (optional): Download the 8BitDo Ultimate Software on Windows to update the receiver's firmware or remap buttons. Connect the receiver to your PC via USB while the software is open. Firmware updates can improve compatibility and add features. Always update firmware if you experience lag or disconnections — outdated firmware is the most common cause of issues.
